Victorian Decorating Tips

Recreating a Victorian Garden in a Minimal Amount of Space

Finally, we are approaching the summer season. The winters always seem so long.

Most of us do not have the space or time to have a huge garden, so we must maximize the space and time that we do have. However, we also want to achieve the best garden we can.

Actually, gardening became very popular during the Victorian era because people had more time to devote to the garden. In our society we have very little leisure time, so we must do our projects in a quick and efficient manor.

Some of the items you may want to consider are lawn ornaments. There are many different types to choose from. You can use birdbaths, sundials, gazing balls etc... These are available at most garden shops. The lawn ornaments will make your garden unique and they don't need to be watered.

Of course, you can also do some of your gardening in containers which really make very decorative accents in a small space. I also like putting small decorative containers within a garden path to break-up the line.

Also, you may want to consider some type of chair or bench placed in view of your garden for your enjoyment. The material most used by our ancestors for the garden seating was cast iron. Today, you may purchase at a resonable price a chair or bench in a man made material which will endure the weather and is easier to move around your garden area.

The plants you may want to consider are: Geranium, Rose, Pansy, Begonia, Primrose,Petunia, Bluebell, Impatient, Morning Glory, Snapdragon, Coleus, Chrysanthemum etc...

Remember to plant what would grow the best in your area. This is available at your local garden shops and many garden catalogs have a map with this information.

Another area you must not forget is your lawn. Just think how awful it would be if your flowers were growing beautifully and your lawn was dead. Even if you have the tiniest of lawns , a well manicured lawn will show off your garden to the fullest. Remember to fertilize your lawn and reseed in the spring and possibly patch up a few dead spots during the summer months.

Of course, you may want to incorporate a few shrubs. The Victorians usually used shrubs for defining their property or disguising a not so attractive fence.

By the way, just a little tip this year, the gazing ball for your garden ornament seems to be in vogue. I have seen them available in tall bases or short. Something to consider adding this year to your garden.

We have tried to give you some quick and easy tips for you to consider for your garden.

The many suggestions we have given you will enable you to change or enhance your garden from year to year so you will never be bored always looking at the same scenery.

Just remember, you are the one who has to enjoy your garden, so don't think of gardening as a chore but a continuing evolving experience that you look forward to year after year.

Happy Gazing!
