Decorating A Little Girl's Room In Victorian Flavor With Recycled Furniture And Unique Decorating Pieces

We wanted to try and update the "Victorian look" with a modern vision when decorating a young girl's room. Actually, the Victorian children's bedroom furniture was very dark, and I don't think unless you were very wealthy, that you actually had your own room or many pieces of furniture.

So, we decided to take that Victorian flavor and do an updated twist. We had a hard time finding little girl's furniture that we really liked in all the retail stores we visited.
So, we only needed to look under our roof and find old furniture we had in storage for around 30 years. We found a dresser and desk.
It is that kind of French Provincial style that every little girl always wanted and white of course.

Before Restoration

However, over the years the dog chewed a little on the leg and the paint was yellowing. Well, all we need to due is put a little wood filling where the dog chewed the leg, and had to do a little sculpting with sand paper after it dried. Also, we spray painted it an antique white to keep the furniture looking bright.

We decided to use the desk as sort of a vanity keeping the Victorian theme in mind. We purchased a wonderful table top dragonfly mirror that looked updated with a country charm, and put a wonderful doll lamp of a very stylish Victorian lady at the corner of the desk.

Of course, if you don't have any stored furniture you may want to check your local flea markets or garage sales to redo a wonderful old piece. Sometimes you may even want to visit the unpainted furniture stores which seem to have popped up everywhere.

Another area in the room to think about is the walls. We wanted to keep them white but, we added an antique doll border which was available at the local retail store. Also, we made interesting pictures by taking antique reproduction frames and a favorite greeting card (repro print) and just cut it out....it looks great for very little money.

Curtains are a major area of a room to look at. We went with ecru lace curtains keeping the Victorian flavor, but we needed a little color so we put a Victorian style teddy bear in center of the curtains for a unique accent.

We also found a Victorian style child's seat with storage to keep in the same flavor.

We hope this will give you a few unique ideas for your little girl's bedroom, and make your ancestors proud we are still keeping the Victorian flavor alive.
