Planning an Up-to-date Victorian Holiday Party for the Family

The Victorians enjoyed the Christmas holiday as much as we do today. They loved planning parties and each detail had to be just right.

However, our time is limited so sometimes that means our creativity is sacrificed.

We want to give you a few easy and decorative ideas that will make your party a memorable event.

Presentation of your holiday table can be the most important part of your party. But, how do we present the food in a creative attractive way.

First, plastic table ware sounds terrible, but suppose you get red and green forks, spoons, knives and wrap a holiday paper napkin around each place setting with a ribbon. Just put them in a basket and let your guests pull out their full set of table ware. This also saves in clean-up later on.

Make your food as attractive as possible. Place a color assortment of your homemade cookies in a simple pedestal plate and arrange in each section a different color. It looks great at your dessert table.

Let us not forget our centerpiece. We have taken an epergne dish, and added a little greenery and inexpensive Victorian ice skaters (that are ornaments) for a dramatic affect. But, keep to just one centerpiece, do not have several different pieces on your table, since this takes the room away from your guests.

For your tablecloth, we have found lace to be the most attractive for any occasion party, but, especially for Christmas to give it that Victorian touch.

When planning our Holiday partys we sometimes forget the children. So, this year plan ahead and have activities planned to keep them involved in the festivities.

One easy way we found to get the children involved is help them prepare for the party. Take their suggestions seriously, and make them feel special. Remember, your children know what the other little ones coming may like, so listen.

A very simple way to keep the children active at your party is to have a separate table set up, say in the family room, and let them do simple crafts together. Have a few supplies available. We have found even coloring a cut out Christmas tree will keep them busy before the food is served. Also, when you set the children's table, why not use a paper table cloth, and let them color a design at each of their place settings.

Another idea is having a basket of Victorian Christmas crackers available. After dinner, you can pass them around to the children. They love the idea of receiving a surprise in each cracker.

One other thing to remember, when your guests are leaving give them a little present of your homemade cookies. Just use large cellophane bags, which you can get in a candy making store, and put some homemade cookies in the bag and tie with a ribbon. Maybe you can use your embossers' gold seals with the Christmas motif to make the bags more festive.

We hope the above "Decorating Tips" help in your party preparation.

Remember, it is important your guests have a good time, but, don't forget have a good time yourself.

Happy Party Decorating!
