It's that time of year again when we are spending a lot of time outdoors and wanting our gardens to look their best. However, we all don't have a green thumb. Let's face it, we don't have the time to ponder in the garden as we would like. Let us give you a lot of information and valuable tips, in a short read, to make outdoor decorating easy and enjoyable.

Remember, gardening was one of the most popular Victorian past-times in the summer months. So, let us keep our ancestor's tradition alive!

We asked one of our local experts from Williams Nursery, David Williams, to enlighten us on how to achieve a garden in an easy and timeless manor.

Williams Nursery has been in business for 80 years. They have the largest selection of perennials and specialty annuals in New Jersey.

Let's Begin

L/V
When should you start planting your flowers for the summer?
(in the north eastern part of the country)

D/W
Most people start there flower planting around Mother's Day.
Of course, it depends on how our weather is and if we anticipate anymore frosts.

L/V
Many people enjoy roses. So, what do we have to do to have wonderful blooming plants?

D/W
You need full sun and well drained soil. Also, they should be fed with rose food on a monthly basis.

We have Daylily, Lavender (dark and light purple color), Peony etc....(as we have pictured)

Many people do not have room for large gardens or want to use containers on their patio. What type of containers would you suggest and flowers?

D/W
We have available many different styles of containers. We have pots made from Vietnam which come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Also, containers made from foam which look like a pottery and are great for insulating roots and really hold up well. There is also Victorian iron work pieces that look even better over time.

What plants would you suggest for containers?

D/W
Coleus is a nice leaf to use for shade and comes in bright colors including orange.
The flowering maple comes in many colors including: pink, yellow, orange.

How about water gardens?

D/W
If you want to use water lilies in the water garden they need full sun. However, if you want to add some fish, they need only moderate sun and the lilies can help shade the fish in the sun.
In the winter you may want to use a special type of heater that is made to heat the pond so the water does not freeze.
