Imagine how rich in history this home is living through 163 years!
The original part of the house was built in 1740 as a two-story brownstone home. The home was owned by Lt. Col. James Marcus Prevost, a British officer, and his wife, Theodosia. In July 1778, after the Battle of Monmouth, George Washington and his officers visited The Hermitage by invitation of Theodosia. Just to mention one of the many famous figures in history to visit the Hermitage.
In 1807 the Hermitage was purchased by Dr. Elijah Rosencrantz for his new bride, Cornelia Suffern, of the New York State Suffern Family. Dr. Rosencrazntz became one of the area's leading industrialists. He was also a father of four children. The Rosencrantz's family owned the Hermitage for over 160 years.
The home was remodeled in 1847, and remained virtually unchanged over the years.
Mary Elizabeth Rosencrantz, who died in 1970, was the last member of the family to inhabit the home.
