Liberty Hall is located on 23 acres. It is unique among historical homes due to its single-family occupancy as an intact house. Every generation has left its mark in the home. The collection of furniture, portraits, textiles memorabilia ect...is overwhelming.
Liberty Hall was built in 1772 by William Livingston, New Jersey's first elected governor. Liberty Hall started as a 14 room Georgian style manor house. But, in the 19th century it was transformed into a 50 room Victorian Italianate mansion.
The gardens are a spectacular site! One of the oldest documented trees is located on the property a large horse chestnut tree in front of the house. It was planted by the Governor's daughter, Susan in 1772. As you will see there is such a rich history not only on the inside of the house but the outside also. You will enjoy a leisurely stroll through the gardens and ponder the lush surroundings this trip will offer you.
As you stroll through Liberty Hall, you will have the feeling that this was really a "lived in" home (which it was) and, not just a museum. It makes you feel that sense of comfort, which will make your tour even more special.
The tour guides are very knowledgeable on the house and will give you an extensive tour. There are a few very cute stories regarding the home's history...but we won't tell you. You have to take the tour for yourself!
