Victorian Living Through Modern Eyes

We have a special treat for you this month we helped coordinate an event called "Victorian Living Through Modern Eyes", presented by the "Friends of the Kenilworth Library."

This event took place in Kenilworth, NJ to benefit the Kenilworth Public Library. It was held in the local Veterans Hall. The Library provides the citizens with many programs for the young and old alike to enjoy and educate throughout the year. They have a great selection of books for every ones taste. The Kenilworth Library has become a sort of community center for the local citizens.

There was an array of demonstrations, presentations and appraisals. We had our own "Reni" from Betty Gallagher Antiques, Inc., Westfield appraise jewelry brought in from our supporters.

Livingvictorian.com was there presenting the webzine and demonstrating wax seals and embossers. It seemed people enjoyed watching "how to make the perfect wax seal impression."

Also, included were 2 very interesting museum presentations. The first one was Crane-Phillips, Cranford. They were dressed in authentic Victorian clothing depicting Mr. and Mrs. Crane, Mrs. Phillips and a Victorian city lady. They also gave a presentation on their wonderful house museum in Cranford, where many activities are available for the public.

Our other museum that attended was Acorn Hall, Morristown. Their, presentation included a description of their fantastic mansion, which has many rooms decorated authentically in wonderful Victorian style. Also, there is a pretty garden area and gazebo. They also have many lectures and programs available for the public to attend.

If you don't have a Victorian home, but would like to have something maybe in a smaller scale, visit Little Treasures, Westfield. They displayed a beautiful Victorian doll house with intricate furniture. A hobby the entire family could enjoy together. Also, they had room boxes that are great for a smaller space in your home, for a unique touch. They showed us how to decorate our home with doll houses and accessories.

There was also a demonstration on tussie mussies, from Little Flower Elations, Kenilworth. We were shown how to make your very own Tussie Mussie. The demonstration was very informative and we learned an abundance of information about flowers. The beautiful flower arrangements around the room at the event and table arrangements of tussie mussies created an elegant and beautiful ambiance that was also created by Little Flower Elations.

We also had a Victorian Tea. Each table was served with Victorian style finger foods. The foods were prepared expertly by PerQup in Kenilworth. Each table was given a variety of finger style sandwiches including a delicious cucumber roll up. Each table was also served home made cookies and desserts from PerQup which gave it a true homey feeling There was also a satisfying tea to ponder and a smooth coffee to enjoy.

A display of unique arrangements was prepared by Niece's Pieces, Rahway. One of the arrangements was an antique violin case beautifully decorated in true Victorian style to use a centerpiece or can be put on a side board. The other wonderful piece was a trunk decorated stylishly to use for your wedding gifts. This could be displayed at your wedding for guests to put their gifts in and then taken home to store those special memories.

A display of Victorian Kenilworth was presented by our local Historical Society. Everyone enjoyed seeing how the town looked when our ancestors were alive. This was very informative and fun for everyone especially the local citizens to see.

The Kenilworth Library also had a display featuring many Victorian books for you to take out and information about all their interesting programs which will be presented in the future for you to attend and enjoy.

As far as we know, this was the first event of its kind anywhere to be held. It combined many facets of Victorianism to be enjoyed by everyone.

It was a wonderfully educational community event to benefit an important part of our town and our local library.

Please note we have included all the demonstrators, presenters etc. addresses below for you to explore.

The evening ended with many door prizes distributed to make for a very exciting and informative night.

Happy Exploring!
