Father's Day
Did you ever wonder when we started to celebrate Father's Day?
We think the holiday of Father's Day started in 1909. However,
as with many holidays we celebrate there are many stories that
were told over the years.
The story goes that Mrs. John Dodds, who lived in Spokane,
Washington wanted to honor her father.
Her father raised her 5 siblings alone, when Mrs. Dodd's mother
passed away in childbirth. Mrs. Dodd's realized
what her father had to do to raise the children by himself and wanted
to make sure people recognize this type of devotion and courage.

Mrs. Dodds, also wanted to honor the many fathers who raised their
families alone and never received any recognition in this enormous task they took on.
So, she campaigned and was noticed. The first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19,
1910 in Spokane, Washington. People around the country started to catch on to this
special holiday and celebrate it as well.
In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the Father's Day holiday and wanted it
to be a national holiday. But, it wasn't until President Lyndon Johnson in 1966
signed a proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.
President Richard Nixon, in 1972, established a permanent national observance of
Fathers Day to be on the third Sunday in June.
As we have read Father's Day is a relatively new holiday.
Thank goodness for Mrs. John Dodds who had enough courage to campaign and
win to have America celebrate this holiday which celebrates and honors our
wonderful and courageous fathers.
Happy Father's Day!
