Fun Food Inventions Late 19th / Early 20th Century

In this issue ,we thought since its the beginning of the new century, we would have a little fun and learn a little history at the same time.

We researched some everyday fun foods, which seem to have been around forever.

Let us start with chocolate. Chocolate, first started as a drink in Spain. It became very popular all through Europe. But, chocolate became a candy much later in England .

Actually, milk chocolate came about when Henry Nestle and Daniel Peter put their talents together.

However, chocolate bars were produced in late 1800's by Milton S. Hershey.

Now, we can enjoy a vast variety of different types of chocolate bars. I bet Mr. Nestle could not predict the popularity of chocolates today.

Let us move on to another one of our favorite foods "The Hot Dog."

The hot dog was first started in Germany. When a German butcher made a sausage that looked like a certain type of dog, it became known as the frankfurter or dachshund.

But, in the mid 1800's German immigrants began putting these frankfurters into buns with other condiments. They began selling these sandwiches in New York City on the streets in push carts.

A cartoonist actually came up with the name "hot dog." He could not spell "dachshund" so he wrote "hot dog." Let us now continue with a few fast facts:

1900 - The first instant coffee was introduced
1904 - New foods introduced were: ice cream cone, Dr. Pepper, peanut butter
1907 - The first canned tuna fish
1912 - Table salt, frozen food concept
1916 - Chinese fortune cookies in California

It amazes us to think "where would we be without any of these foods today"? What will this century bring???

Happy Eating!!!
