Collecting Antique Lockets
|
Lockets have always been a little treasure to behold. The Victorian's with their sentimentality and love of jewelry, the locket was the perfect accessory.
Whether it holds a loved one's photo or lock of hair, the locket carries a special meaning to the wearer.
Today, antique lockets can be found it many different metals, styles and price ranges. Many gold filled lockets are still under $100, which makes them an affordable collectible.
Locket styles have changed over the years, mostly effected by the popular style of the day such as; architecture, Japanese style, interest in colored stones, cameos, mourning lockets whatever seemed to be in vogue at the time.
Of course the metals also vary, they could be gold, gold filled, and in the late 1800's silver became the rage.
Also, lockets can be opened from the side, bottom, top or they could be a slip locket which will slide or (slip) out the photo.
Lockets were worn on chains, ribbons and chatelaines.
The Victorian's carried, of course a loved one's picture, but many also had in their locket either a locket of hair or hair weaved into an intricate design.
There are also a wide range of shapes available, ranging from round, oval, square rectangular, heart and many more....

Lockets were also incorporated in "expansion bracelets"(similar to our stretch bracelets). They were patented in the late 1800's. We were also told they were revived in the 1940's as "sweetheart" bracelets. Usually, the locket was either round or heart shaped and monogrammed...and we thought stretch bracelets were a new idea....
We have even come across a "magic ball" locket. This looks like a miniature clear magic ball that can store a picture on both sides...what fun!
You can find lockets almost anywhere, flea markets, antique stores, yard sales the exploration is endless!
Actually the locket becomes such a multi collectible object. If you collect photographs, hair jewelry etc...a locket will be another item to obtain.
One of the great advantages of collecting lockets is they can still be worn today, and are one of the top collectables . It seems in vogue now are cameos...so start looking for large cameo lockets to wear and be the fashion trend setter of the day!
Happy Collecting!
