Collecting Mother-Of-Pearl
What is mother-of-pearl? Mother-of-pearl is the lining of a shell.
It is of any shell bearing mollusk. It is usually the same color, composition
and quality as the pearls that were produced by that particular mollusk.
It is a natural product that has a wonderful iridescent quality that makes it
very enjoyable to look at. Also, it is still very affordable which makes it even
more attractive.

Mother-of-pearl is one of the most versatile materials to collect.
It has been made into many different types of objects, not just jewelry.
The Victorian's used mother-of pearl in jewelry (of course), inlaid in furniture,
knife handles, dip pen handles, wax seal handles, calling card cases, buttons,
opera glasses etc.....

Also many pieces of mother-of-pearl have been carved into cameos, calling card cases, roses for jewelry etc...... Pieces of mother-of-pearl have been put together almost similar to a puzzle which is most evident in many calling card cases.
We even found an umbrella handle that was carved out of mother-of-pearl, which we have pictured. This piece was probably made in the 1920's.
The mother-of-pearl still is used for many of the same items today. That is what makes it a great collectible. You can collect both modern and antique (vintage) mother-of-pearl.
Mother-of-pearl is now used quite often in sterling silver jewelry set with marcasite stones which gives it a very antique look.
You may also notice that the mother-of-pearl is very unique, by having little color variations each piece has its own personality. Mother-of-pearl has its own fingerprint that only mother nature can give it. That is why you never get tired of looking at mother-of-pearl.
